Frequently Asked Questions about Inside Wireman Apprenticeships

If you have questions regarding the Inside Wireman apprenticeship program offered by the Fresno JATC, please review the following Frequently Asked Questions.

Apprenticeship Program

What is a registered apprenticeship program?

A registered apprenticeship program is a proven model of apprenticeship that has been validated by the Department of Labor or State Apprenticeship Agency. Registered apprentices are a combination of on-the-job training and classroom instruction in which workers are paid to learn. Through this program, electrical apprentices follow the earn while you learn model where they learn from experienced tradespeople as they make a livable wage, while they work their way toward becoming journeymen electrical workers.

How long does an Inside Wireman apprenticeship take?

An Inside Wireman apprenticeship can be completed in five years. Each year, apprentices need to complete at least 180 classroom hours, so after five years, they will have the 900 hours needed to graduate. Over the course of the five-year apprenticeship, Inside Wireman apprentices must also complete at least 8,000 hours of on-the-job training.

What do apprentices earn?
An apprentice’s main goal is to “top out” as a journeyman, but during the five-year program they earn a livable wage. As their skillset increases, apprentices also have the opportunity to earn more money thanks to scheduled raises in the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Through training, apprentices can earn industry and safety certifications and some college credit if they wish to pursue a degree. For the apprentice wage scale, see wage rates.
