Inside Wireman
Inside Wiremen are electricians who specialize in connecting electrical systems to an external power source, facilitating power distribution throughout a facility.
Inside Wiremen inspect and maintain electrical motors and equipment. Their job may include installing, maintaining or repairing electrical systems or equipment with electrical components. Inside Wiremen may install alarm systems and electrical control panels. In addition to installations, they inspect, maintain and repair existing electrical systems within a facility.
Inside Wiremen can work in various locations, both inside and outside of a building. They can install a fire alarm system in a high-rise building one day and install conduit in a ditch on the outside of the building the next. Inside Wiremen may install electrical systems in industrial facilities such as chemical plants, power plants, chip manufacturing facilities, automobile plants and more. Every installation requires distinct electrical requirements and corresponding systems to meet those needs.
The apprenticeship training covers all the necessary knowledge for the varied tasks associated with the Inside Wireman classification. The hands-on responsibilities of most Inside Wiremen include installing, assembling, testing, repairing, planning and designing electrical equipment used for power, lighting and diverse systems.
The Inside Wireman apprenticeship is a five-year program. The apprenticeship program consists of both classroom instruction and paid on-the-job training. On-the-job training will take place on various construction sites. Throughout the five-year program, apprentices must spend at least 900 hours in the classroom and at least 8,000 hours performing on-the-job training to become a journeyman.
